An excerpt from "Round Pen First Steps":
Turn your horse into the round pen and stand in the center. Look at him and realize that this marks a starting point. If you're retraining a bratty horse or starting a youngster, then the animal you're looking at is absolutely convinced that "you are not the boss of it." For all intents and purposes, he doesn't even know you're there. We begin to crack that veneer by causing the horse to move. Remember Helen Keller? As the horse (now running willy nilly about the pen, unfocused) begins to realize that we are the ones controlling his speed and direction, he begins to pay us our due. I'll bottom line it for you: The horse will hand over his attention (to you) as his performance improves. Get the horse to turn at a specific point, stop him precisely here or there, keep him moving at x-speed... and you'll find, wonders of wonders, that he's begun to realize that you're the one calling the shots.
