Picture your lead rope attached to the top of a coconut tree the same height as your horse. Picture the top of that tree leaning away from you. Throughout today's exercise, you must be particularly careful to not allow your horse to pull and lean away from you like that tree. Most horses do this - usually as you finish a maneuver - and the remedy is always the same: Get them moving forward that instant, even if you're asking for them to "back" at the time, even if you thought you were done with the movement. They can never ever learn to "end" a movement by rocking back like that tree. They have to carry themselves in an up, forward position when they walk backward – otherwise they'll begin dragging themselves through it. (rpt)
