An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

You'll need dozens of objects, keeping in mind that the more steps you put into this, the easier it'll be later when it comes time to put the halter on, or blanket, bathe or clip the horse. Look over the stuff you've accumulated and mentally arrange them from least to most scary.

A note to the wise: As I mentioned in yesterday's installment, babies can get scared and stay scared if you push them too hard. The work we're doing here should never reach the more robust craziness that we might subject an adult to. Working up to "most scary" involves something like wafting a saddle blanket or pad about and moving it around on the horse's back. It does not entail shooting off a pistol while revving up a chain saw and cracking a bullwhip. I push older horses pretty hard in an effort to "bomb proof" them and keep a rider safer; but your foal's brain will shoot to overload and stay there. So, relax. You'll have plenty of time to accustom your horse to nuttiness later in his life.
