An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

Babies can be run into fences (breaking necks), pushed through fences (shredding themselves) and pushed to the point of exhaustion (damaging lungs and legs). Josh Lyons, in his terrific "Foal Handling" video, has an excellent piece of advice: "If you're working your young horse – and either of you is sweating – you're pushing too hard." Keep that in mind as you work through this material: If either of you breaks a sweat, back off. Take a break or work to get the horse calmed by calming your requests. Horses don't think in terms of win and lose – so give it a rest. If you have trouble keeping yourself checked back then make a point to only work the baby when another person, a person who doesn't take guff from you, is there. That person's job is as a referee, to order a siesta at critical moments. Or, set yourself a time limit of, let's say five minutes. Five minutes tick by, you get out, no matter what. Or, carry around a piece of paper that says "When I lose my temper, I screw up my horse." No kidding, babies can be a challenge. Do what it takes to keep yourself in control.
