An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
It's a balancing act: Do I have to spend the time to teach this today – or can I wait a few months and get it done in half the time? I'll make these numbers up for the point of illustration, but you'll get the point: Let's say it takes 3 hours to teach a 2-month old to come to us, it might take a yearling one half hour. Credit babies accordingly. If you'd like to desensitize a colt today, great, but be aware that it might be exponentially simpler to accomplish six months from now. Be aware during your training sessions that you're working with young brains that have trouble retaining information and if things seem to be falling flat, perhaps you should give the horse some time to mature.
