An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

In the same way that geldings are easier to teach than mares and mares are easier to teach than stallions, your young horse will get easier to train as he gets older. If you're the type to hang out 24/7 with your youngster, that's great – but it's important to manage your expectations. The typical un-weaned baby is scared of his own shadow while you'll find the older horse less timid (thus more focused) and simpler to advance. (Note: I said "simpler," not "simple.") They're babies and logic is often illusive. They'll learn – it just takes more time, more repetition, more patience.
