An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

Personally, I split my approach – working in small ways daily with the colt or filly who has yet to be weaned to desensitize it to my presence or to respect my body positioning, (e.g., petting whenever possible, desensitizing it to the feel of the lunge whip and consistently enforcing rules like "Don't turn your rump to me" and "Don't crowd me" by urging it away). Later, when the horse is a couple of months past weaning I amp it up (adding in actual training plans where we focus on leading, picking up feet, etc.) Waiting some time beyond weaning gives the babies time to naturally become a bit more dependent, respectful and focused on me as I feed and work around them daily. Plus, waiting till Mom horse is out of the picture negates stress she might have otherwise been put through (borrowing and working with her baby).
